Plantation
Founded by Alexandre Gabriel of Maison Ferrand between 1999 and 2003, Plantation Rum—now rebranded as Planteray—pioneered a new era of premium rum by uniting the unique terroirs of the Caribbean with the finesse of French Cognac craftsmanship.
Gabriel’s vision was to source extraordinary rums from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Belize, Fiji, and beyond—then elevate them through double aging.
This dual maturation process begins with tropical aging in ex-bourbon barrels and culminates in France, where the rums rest in French oak Cognac casks, imparting remarkable complexity and elegance.
In 2017, Maison Ferrand—Plantation’s parent company—acquired the West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD) in Barbados and a one-third stake in Jamaica’s National Rum Company. These acquisitions deepened the brand’s direct involvement in sourcing and refining exceptional rums from the Caribbean’s most storied regions.
The Planteray portfolio is celebrated for its diversity and depth:
Signature Blends such as the 5-Year Barbados Rum
Grand Añejo Series from Guatemala and Belize
Bar Classics like O.F.T.D. Overproof Rum
Special Editions featuring rare vintage bottlings from its global terroir explorations.
A standout offering is the Original Dark Rum, a masterful blend of young Barbadian and aged Jamaican rums, married again in France to deliver layers of rich spice, molasses, and smoky complexity—making it a favorite among cocktail aficionados.
In 2024, the name evolved to Planteray in response to societal concerns about colonial associations in the original branding.
The new name honors both the sugar cane planter and the vital rays of the sun—fundamental elements in the rum’s creation and spirit.
