DonQ
Don Q is a historic rum brand produced by Destilería Serrallés in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The Serrallés family's legacy in rum and sugar dates to the early 19th century, when Juan Sebastián Serrallés emigrated from Spain and established sugar cane plantations. In 1865, his son Don Juan Serrallés founded Hacienda Mercedita and produced the first casks of rum using a French copper pot still.
Over the years, Don Q has become Puerto Rico’s top-selling rum, recognized for its smooth, mixable character and premium aged offerings. The portfolio features white and clear rums, gold and blended rums, bold high-proof expressions, flavored variants, and extended-aged selections.
Key Don Q expressions include:
Don Q Cristal — a clean, multiple-distilled white rum aged 1½ to 5 years in American white oak barrels. Designed to be highly mixable, even in vodka-style cocktails.
Don Q Gold — richer, with pronounced vanilla and oak notes, yet remains blend- and mix-friendly.
Don Q 151° — a bold, high-proof (about 75.5% ABV) rum, aged up to 3 years. Notes of vanilla, oak, smoke, and tobacco make it excellent for tiki or bold cocktails.
Don Q Reserva / Reserva 7 Year Old — aged rum with amber hues and a smoother texture resulting from extended oak maturation.
Don Q Gran Reserva — the most premium in the range, blending rums aged 9–12 years and solera rums aged up to 50 years. Balances sweet and dry flavor profiles; best enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
Aged Don Q expressions typically offer flavors of vanilla, oak, caramel, and spice, balanced by softer notes of tropical fruit or gentle molasses sweetness. The white and crystal variants are cleaner, smoother, and lighter, making them ideal for cocktails. Use of American oak barrels, skillful blending, high-proof options, and adherence to Puerto Rican rum regulations all contribute to Don Q’s distinctive character.
Don Q has modernized in recent years, adopting environmentally responsible practices, expanding its international distribution, and preserving its family-owned status across generations.
