Westerhall
Westerhall Rum is crafted at the historic Westerhall Estate in St. David’s, Grenada, famously known as “The Spice Isle” of the Caribbean. With roots dating back to the 18th century, the estate boasts a rich legacy of cultivating sugar cane, bananas, nutmeg, and limes, as well as producing distinctive rums that embody the flavors and heritage of Grenada.
Originally established as a sugar plantation, Westerhall installed traditional cane processing machinery in the 1800s—some of which is still preserved on the estate today. As the Caribbean rum industry evolved, Westerhall shifted its focus to rum distillation, blending, aging, and bottling, becoming a central player in Grenada’s spirits landscape.
By the late 19th and early 20th century, the estate installed mechanical sugar-cane processing equipment (notably in 1862), marking a period of modernization. This historical machinery is still on display at the estate, offering a glimpse into Grenada’s rum heritage. In recent decades, Westerhall transitioned from solely producing molasses and cane to focusing on branded rum exports. The modern lineup—No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 7, and No. 10—represents age-statement blends (e.g., No. 5 is aged 5 years, and No. 10 is aged 10 years), each offering a unique balance of maturity, flavor, and Grenadian character.
A hallmark of Westerhall is its distinctive influence of spices. Grenada is renowned worldwide for its nutmeg, mace, and other aromatic spices, and lush spice groves surround the estate. Uniquely, the water used to reduce the rum’s ABV is naturally filtered through the roots of spice trees, subtly infusing the spirit with nuanced spice notes. This, combined with blending, tropical barrel aging in charred oak, and local terroir, gives Westerhall its signature profile—smooth, spicy, and warmly golden.
Blending at Westerhall is an art honed over generations. For years, the estate sourced aged molasses-based rums from renowned producers in Trinidad and Barbados, finishing the aging, blending, and bottling processes on-site. This approach enabled the creation of blends that marry regional Caribbean styles with Grenadian finesse.
Although primary distillation at Westerhall has ceased or been reduced, the estate’s identity remains firmly rooted in its heritage, showcasing historic machinery, local traditions, and a commitment to quality. Westerhall’s award-winning rum blends continue to gain international recognition for their flavor and authenticity.
Key expressions in the portfolio include Westerhall No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 7, No. 10, the overproof Jack Iron, and various plantation, vintage, and special-aged blends. Each expression features a distinct proof, aging profile, and harmonious interplay of spice and oak, offering something for every palate.
Westerhall rums are renowned for their inviting flavor profile, characterized by rich molasses, caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and a medley of Grenadian spices, including nutmeg and mace. The palate is warm and smooth, with tropical aging intensifying the barrel’s influence and drawing out notes of wood, vanilla, and a satisfying balance of dryness and sweetness. The finish is long, gently spiced, and distinctly Grenadian.
