Guyana

Guyana, nestled along the Demerara River in South America, stands as a cornerstone of global rum heritage—renowned for its signature Demerara rum, a style celebrated for its depth, richness, and the fertile legacy of its sugarcane fields.

At the heart of this tradition is Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), based at the historic Diamond Distillery. DDL has unified Guyana’s legendary distilling heritage under one roof, preserving antique stills from iconic estates like Port MourantUitvlugtEnmoreAlbion, and Skeldon. Its flagship El Dorado Rum remains one of the world’s most celebrated aged rums.

The distinctive character of Guyanese rum is forged by the intense sweetness of Demerara sugar, long fermentations with indigenous wild yeasts that build layers of estery complexity, and accelerated tropical aging in Guyana’s hot, humid climate, yielding spirits with bold, caramel- and toffee-rich profiles.

Single-still releases—such as those from the legendary Port Mourant double wooden pot still or the Uitvlugt Coffey still—are especially prized by collectors and connoisseurs for their robust, full-bodied character and remarkable individuality.

Since 2021, Demerara Rum has been protected by a Geographical Indication (GI), safeguarding its authenticity and storied methods. The Guyana Tourism Authority’s “Rum Route” now invites visitors to embark on immersive journeys through historic distilleries, plantations, and the vibrant cultural tapestry that shapes Guyana’s legendary rums.
