Bologne

Bologne Rum is rooted in one of Guadeloupe’s most storied estates. Established in 1887 from a former sugar factory, it is now the island’s oldest operating distillery, beautifully situated between the volcanic slopes and the Caribbean Sea in Basse-Terre.

What distinguishes Bologne is its dedication to cultivating black cane—a rare, low-yield sugarcane variety grown exclusively on the estate to produce exceptionally aromatic agricole rums. Distillation is carried out at low temperatures (as cool as 55–60 °C) in column stills, preserving the cane’s most delicate aromas.

Owned by the Sargenton-Callard family since 1930, Bologne is celebrated for its tradition, quality, and continuity. The estate covers roughly 148 hectares, yielding about 15,000 tonnes of cane per year, and stands out for its environmental leadership—holding High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 certification and recycling all production waste.

Bologne’s acclaimed range includes:

  • White Agricole Rums: 50° and 55° expressions, showcasing vibrant notes of lemon, apple, and fresh cane, often rested briefly to develop subtle golden hues.

  • Black Cane (limited edition): An exceptionally aromatic rum crafted entirely from estate-grown black cane.

  • Cask Matured: Aged 18–24 months in French oak, then finished in Cognac barrels—delivering a silky, elegant, terroir-driven profile.

  • Organic Parcellaire Whites: Expressions such as “Grande Savane,” produced from a single organic plot, offering nuanced, layered aromatics.

The Bologne estate is recognized as a Living Heritage Company. It features original sugar factory ruins, including irrigation canals, mills, and a 1930s manor house, now home to a distillery shop and visitor center.
