Brugal
Brugal & Co., established in 1888 by Don Andrés Brugal Montaner in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic—after refining his rum-making expertise in Cuba—is one of the Caribbean’s oldest and most iconic rum distilleries.
In 1920, Brugal introduced the Dominican Republic’s first aged golden rum, cementing its reputation for barrel-aged excellence. The brand’s signature “net-wrapped” bottle debuted in 1940, quickly becoming a distinctive hallmark.
In 1976, the third generation launched Extra Viejo (Extraviejo), a premium flagship that elevated the global standing of Dominican rum. The centennial Siglo de Oro was released in 1988, followed by Brugal 1888 in 2010—an acclaimed double-aged rum matured first in American oak, then finished in Spanish sherry casks. The exclusive Papa Andrés, introduced in 2013, swiftly became one of Brugal’s most coveted reserves.
In 2008, the Edrington Group—renowned for its Scotch whisky portfolio—acquired a majority stake in Brugal, securing the family’s ongoing leadership while expanding the brand’s global reach.
Brugal remains a proud family-run legacy, now guided by fifth-generation Maestra Ronera Jassil Villanueva Quintana—a visionary who skillfully blends tradition with modern innovation.
