Bundaberg Rum—fondly called "Bundy"—was born in Bundaberg, Queensland, when seven local sugar mill owners founded the Bundaberg Distilling Company in 1888–1889 to transform molasses, a sugar industry byproduct, into rum.
Still produced on its original Bundaberg East site, the distillery stands as a symbol of regional pride and entrepreneurial spirit—earning induction into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 2010.
Bundaberg faced a major setback in 1936, when a lightning strike ignited a devastating fire, destroying rum vats and impacting the local river. Nevertheless, the distillery was resilient—rebuilt and continuing its legacy.
In 2000, global spirits leader Diageo acquired Bundaberg Rum, securing its international reach and safeguarding its enduring legacy. Bundaberg is famed for its distinctive branding—from the iconic polar bear mascot (introduced in the 1960s to soften its image) to its signature square bottles and bold yellow labels.
Visitors can experience the interactive Bundaberg Rum Distillery tour, which features a museum, guided tastings, and the iconic “Big Bundy Bottle” landmark—enhanced by a state-of-the-art visitor center, opened in 2016 for $8.5 million.
